How Big Should I Make My Quilt?

Deciding on the perfect size for your quilt involves a few key considerations before you start measuring. Here are some tips to help you make the best choices for your project:

Consider the Quilt Length

First, decide if you want your quilt to reach the floor on both sides of the bed or if you prefer to showcase a beautiful dust ruffle. The length of the sides and bottom of the quilt is crucial in determining the correct size.

Think About the Top of the Bed

Next, consider whether you want the quilt to cover the entire top of the bed or if you want to add extra length for covering pillows. A small pillow tuck adds an additional 10 inches in length, allowing you to tuck part of the quilt under the pillows before bringing it up and over. A large pillow tuck adds 20 inches, providing ample room for fluffy pillows.

Use Our Quilt Size Calculator for Easy Sizing

Once you have a vision in mind, use our quilt size calculator for a quick and easy decision on the size of your quilt. Adjusting the size can be straightforward if you consider adding or modifying borders to your project.

Account for Shrinkage

Keep in mind that the quilting process can cause approximately 3 to 5 percent shrinkage, depending on the density of the quilting. Washing and drying your quilt will also cause some shrinkage. Plan accordingly by allowing a little extra fabric where necessary.

Start Measuring

Now for the fun part! Enter the length and width of the top of your bed into our quilt size calculator. For the height, decide whether you want the quilt to reach all the way to the floor or just halfway to show off a dust ruffle. Use that measurement for the height.

By considering these factors and using our quilt size calculator, you can ensure that your quilt will be the perfect size for your bed. Happy quilting!
